Frequently asked questions.
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is performed by inserting a tiny, sterile probe into the hair follicle.A small amount of current is discharged which destroys the follicle. This prevents any further hair growth from that follicle.
There are two methods of electrolysis that are commonly used; one method uses heat to destroy the follicle, and the other uses a chemical reaction.
Electrolysis is well suited to clients who aren’t suited to IPL laser hair reduction, particularly those with grey/blonde hair. It is also a very effective method for treating strong hormonal hair growth, especially on the face.
Why do people have unwanted hair growth?
Studies show that lots of men and women have unwanted hair growth, which can have a negative impact on self esteem and confidence. There are many reasons why a person may have unwanted hair growth. Normal fluctuations in hormone levels can cause hair to grow in new places, as can normal imbalances. Excessive hair growth can also be hereditary, or caused by various medications. Stress can cause unwanted hair growth too!
What areas can be treated with electrolysis?
Electrolysis can be performed on any normal, healthy skin. Areas most commonly treated are:
Face, including upper lip, chin, neck and cheeks
Underarms
Fingers and toes
Breasts and abdomen
Bikini line
How long will my treatment session last?
The average treatment ranges from 15 minutes to 90 minutes. Weekly or fortnightly sessions are recommended, and many clients find this frequency to be most effective. The length of each treatment depends several factors such as,
the reaction of the skin to the treatment
the density of hair growth,
the size of the treatment area
The length of the treatment session will also be affected by the client’s stage in the journey; initial sessions tend to be longer, with the length of each session gradually decreasing as the hair growth decreases.
How many electrolysis treatments will I need?
Permanent hair removal isn’t achieved in a single session. The length of each client’s electrolysis journey is variable, depending on several different factors, such as the area being treated, and the type of hair growing there. Larger areas, or areas with coarser hair will likely require more treatments than areas with finer hair.
Why do I need multiple treatments?
Hair growth occurs in cycles, and each hair on a person’s body progresses through a cycle that includes growth, rest and shedding. Individual hairs may be at different stages in this cycle. More than one treatment offers the opportunity to catch and treat hairs in the correct stage of the cycle.
Furthermore, there are many hair follicles on the skin, and those which are dormant at the time of treatment can’t be seen, and therefore can’t be treated. Multiple treatments can increase the likelihood of catching those dormant follicles when they have produced a hair.
What will I feel during the treatment?
The sensation is typically described as a sting, or a sharp prick. The insertion of the fine, sterile probe into the hair follicle shouldn’t cause any pain. Once the current is applied, the heating sensation is over quickly. The hair should then slide out of the follicle.
What are the advantages of electrolysis?
Electrolysis has many advantages, offering permanent removal of unwanted hair for many people. Electrolysis isn’t limited to any particular hair or skin colour, and can safely remove hair all over the body. Over time, electrolysis can be more cost effective than some other methods of hair removal, such as waxing or threading.
Are there any possible risks or complications?
Electrolysis is a safe and effective method of hair removal. The skin in the treatment area may appear red immediately following treatment. Slight swelling may also occur. These effects are usually short-lived, often subsiding within a few hours (though they can persist for up to 48 hours).
